Bioengineering Simulation Laboratory

The Bioengineering simulation lab is located in 112 Hallowell Building. These computers are for graduate and undergraduate use. Below are some rules and tips to help with this lab.

1. No Food or Drink allowed in the simulation lab

If you are found eating or drinking in the simulation lab, your privileges will be revoked.

2. Door Access

Students can access the laboratory using their student ID. Swipe it like a credit card in an ATM machine. If you get a new ID, the new card number must be entered into the database before the card with operate the door.

3. Logging onto computers in the simulation lab

Accounts are on the BIOENG-LABS domain (NOT the PSU_ENGINEERING domain or the local computer account: SIMULATIONxx)

Graduate and undergraduate students are given an account throughout the period they are enrolled in department. Non-bioengineering students are only given an account for the semester they are enrolled in a bioengineering class.

Login ID: For each student, your login is the same as your CAC user_id (e.g. abc123).
Password: To initially login, your password is:
BioE(Last 4 digits of your Student #)(3-CAC initials all in uppercase)
So for example, a password would be: BioE8888ABC (very case sensitive).

After you initially login, the system will request that you change your password. Your password must be at least 8 characters, a combination of upper and lower case letters and have at least one number.

4. Saving Work - Mapped drives/Personal space

Students may now connect to their PSU U-drive or PASS space from the computer lab. Find the MapPSUSpace icon on the desktop or in the Start Menu. Then select which drive(s) you wish to connect to, enter your CAC username and password and press connect.

Each student has two drives mapped to the \\ENGRBIOELAB domain.
M: drive - user_id $ on 'engrbioelab' (M:)
Only you have access your M: drive. Save your work to this drive. Work should not be saved on the local computer as these computers may be periodically erased.

N: drive - BIOCOMM on 'engrbioelab' (N:)
Everyone has access to the N: drive. This temprorary space should be used for sharing data with other students in your class. Do not permanently save work here as this space will be periodically be erased.

If both of these shares do not appear, you may try the following:
1. Run the following update command
a. Open a command prompt (Start | Run | type cmd and press OK).
b. Type "gpupdate /force" without the quotes.
c. Log off the computer and log back on.

2. If your personal space does not appear:
a. Right click on My Computer, then Tools / Map Network Drive
b. Under Drive, select M:
c. At folder, type: \\ENGRBIOELAB\user_id and a dollar sign $. (e.g. \\ENGRBIOELAB\userid$)
d. Click FINISH

5. Printing

Default printing accounts have been set up for each students to print 100 sheets on the printer located in 112 Hallowell. If your printing account runs out of funds please see Mr. Gary Meyers (gmeyers@engr.psu.edu) to add additional funds. The printer name should be set to \\ENGRBIOELAB\BIOE4100.

If you do not have the printer, you may try the following:
1. Run gpupdate
a. Open a command prompt (Start | Run | type cmd and press OK).
b. Type "gpupdate /force" without the quotes.
c. Log off the computer and log back on.

2. Map the printer:
a. Select Start | Control Panel | Printers
b. Add a printer
c. Enter \\engrbioelab\bioe4100

6. Software Installed on Simulation2-23

You do not have permission to install software or programs on the computers. If you need special software please contact Mr. Gary Meyers (gmeyers@engr.psu.edu).

Currently installed on all of the computers:
MS Office 2003 (Word, Excel, Power Point, ect.)
Adobe Reader 7.0
Matlab® 7.0
FEMLAB® 3.1
Solid Works
EndNotes 8.0
MapPSUSpace

7. Logging Off

When you are finished log off, do not shut down the computer.

8. Hours

The computer lab is open for use 24 hours per day but only graduate research students have keys to the building which is locked at 6 pm daily. Scheduled classes which use the computers have priority for 112 Hallowell. Check the door for class times which have priority.
