RE: MANDATORY Environmental
Health & Safety (EHS) Training
for new students and annual retraining.
Penn State REQUIRES all personnel who work in laboratories to
be trained in the proper handling of hazardous waste within three
months of employment. Each PI is responsible for the training of
their students for the laboratories in Hallowell.
New staff and students are required to attend an initial training
at the EHS building.
- Initial Chemical and Chemical and Hazardous Waste Handling
Training (0.5 hrs)
Required of anyone who supervises or works in an area using flammable,
acidic or basic, toxic or reactive chemicals. EHS On-line

up online for available classes. You will be asked for your ITS (CAC) ID
number (same as your Penn State Access ID)
Annual retraining is required of all personnel in Hallowell in
the Fall of each year.
- Refresher Chemical and Chemical Waste Training
Required annually of anyone who has taken the initial training for chemical
and chemical waste handling. Consists of a review of the training information
and is available online, in pdf format. A copy of the refresher training
document must be signed and maintained in respective lab offices. Chemical

After completing the training, please fill out the training document
and turn it into your respective Laboratory Safety Officer listed
below NOT the department. Training documentation for each group
will be collected from the group lab safety officer by
31 October of each year.
